Flow regulator trial

We’re looking at new ways to help customers save water. The flow regulator controls the flow of water into a home.

It saves water without users needing to change how they use it or fit water-saving products.

The flow regulator makes water flow steadier, which can also protect your plumbing. We want to see how much water they can save.

We’re working with the Water Research Centre (WRc) and several other water companies on this trial.

We have contacted a number of customers, and we will randomly select a small number to take part.

When the trial is running, you don’t need to do anything – just carry on using water as normal.

After the trial, we would like your feedback on the device. We’ll send you a short survey to complete and will send you a £25 electronic shopping voucher as a thank you.

You can have the device removed at any point during and after the trial.

It's a simple device that fits onto the pipework at the boundary of your home, close to your outside stop tap.

Its job is to prevent excessive water flow, so you can use water more efficiently. This helps to save water and energy.

No. Your pressure will remain the same. The device limits the maximum flow rate, which is how much water comes out per minute.

You'll still have the same water pressure for everyday use. The device simply keeps the flow steady, so everything feels normal.

If several taps or appliances are running at the same time, you might notice a slight drop in flow. This is completely normal and won't affect your heating system or stored water supply.

Static pressure (the baseline force in your pipework) will stay the same because the regulator doesn't block or reduce pressure from the mains.

In the UK, Ofwat requires water suppliers to provide at least 9 L/min of flow at the property boundary. This device ensures flow is well above that minimum, maintaining pressure and supply standards.

The device is called the NRv2 LoFlo valve. It is made by Groundbreaker Limited, a UK-based manufacturer.

We will install a monitor in early March and the flow regulator two weeks afterwards.

We will let you know when we arrive and will leave a card to let you know they have been fitted.

We will:

• let you know when we arrive
• turn off your water for about 15-20 minutes while we fit the device
• leave you a card letting you know we've visited
• provide you with any other information you need.

After it has been fitted, everything will work as normal.

If your water looks cloudy after the installation, this is likely because of trapped air in the pipes.

Run your cold tap for a few seconds and it should clear.

We will use your water use data to understand how well the device works and how much water it helps save.

We will only collect the information we need for the trial, such as your address and logger results.

We will keep this information for the length of the trial and for up to six months afterwards. After that, we will delete it.

We will share this data with our research partner (WRc), who will analyse the results for us. It won't be shared with anyone else.
