Sewer spruce-up for Shore Road

Essential sewer network maintenance will cause a minor impact to parking along Poole’s Shore Road during June and July.

Wessex Water teams will be surveying, cleaning and relining sections of pipeline that have become clogged with grit which, if left uncleared, could increase the threat of pollution.

A small number of parking bays along Shore Road will be unavailable at various times between Monday 1 June and Friday 3 July while the work is completed to remove the grit, which builds up when rainwater enters the sewers via drains and mixes with wastewater from homes and businesses.

The project will travel south to north along Shore Road, from near Banks Road/Shore Road junction to close to East Dorset Sailing Club.

From Monday 6 to Friday 24 July, it will continue along the Promenade and shoreline pipe north of East Dorset Sailing Club. While there will be no impact on Shore Road itself, the Promenade will be closed to pedestrians during this time. Minor additional work will take place on several residential roads later this summer.

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “This project will help to prevent dry-season discharges from sewers via a nearby combined storm overflow and needs to be completed in the summer months when the sewer is considerably lower than the full capacity it is at during winter.

"By cleaning, relining and sealing sewers in this way we can protect the environment, preventing foul water escaping and groundwater entering sewers, which can lead to flooding or storm overflows automatically discharging into rivers or the sea if the system becomes overwhelmed.

"Shore Road will remain open throughout, although several nearby parking bays will be suspended when work is taking place within various manholes at different times along the road.

"We have written to local customers and are working with nearby businesses to ensure the impact on them is limited as much as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
