As a customer living in an unmetered property, you have been invited to help us to plan for future water needs in your local community.
To do this we need to accurately forecast future demand so that we can ensure we have reliable water supplies for your area in 25 years’ time.
An important part of our forward planning is understanding how customers living in unmetered homes use their water. It involves homes like yours, which pay non-metered (unmeasured) charges having a monitor installed. The monitor is not used for billing purposes but helps us to understand water use in your area.
I’d like to invite you to take part in this ongoing Water Use Survey.
Taking part in our survey will not affect your water charges. Your bill will continue to be based on the rateable value of your home and this will not change.
To get involved and help us forecast future demand, you simply need to sign up – we will do the rest!
You will continue to pay unmetered charges but the installation of a monitor will enable us to learn how much water customers on unmetered charges actually use.
Together, with the data we have from customers living in metered properties, we can calculate more accurately the average amount of water used per person across the entire region.
If you sign up, we will arrange for one of our technicians to fit the monitor. You don’t need to do anything else. Once it is installed, you will receive a £50 voucher as a thank you.
The data we receive from the monitor installed will be both confidential and anonymous and will be stored in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation.
We will collect the data monthly from the monitor installed using a data logger connected to it. To find out more how we use your personal information, please see our privacy policy.
You will find some frequently asked questions below.
If you are happy to take part, sign up today.

Your household has been selected as part of a sample of households that pay unmetered charges.
The way you pay for water and sewerage services will remain unchanged. You are paying unmetered charges based on the rateable value of your property and will continue to do so this unless you choose to opt to pay metered charges.
We need to be able to forecast future water demand. An important part of this calculation is to understand how customers who aren’t on meters use their water. Whilst we can gather usage data from metered customers, we cannot do this for unmetered and so this survey allows us to do this.
The data we receive from the monitor installed will be both confidential and anonymous and will be stored in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation. At times there may be a requirement to share the data externally with water industry consultants to assist us with calculations, however all data will be anonymised.
Ensuring we have enough drinking water to supply our customers requires long-term planning and includes population trends and climate change predictions. Equally important is understanding how customers use water. This information allows us to plan at least 25 years into the future to ensure we can meet the predicted demand whilst protecting the environment.
All of the information provided on the questionnaire and all the survey data we collect is treated in the strictest confidence and is used anonymously. All data will be used and stored in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation.
Taking part in this survey will not change your water bill. Your charges will continue to be based upon the same rateable value you are on today.
A standard household water meter is fitted. This meter has a data logger connected to it that stores the meter readings and allows us to retrieve the information.
Data is typically analysed monthly.
Planning future water needs is an ongoing activity and so we typically monitor water use from our volunteers for as long as they remain living at their property. Many households have been helping us for many years.
If for any reason you choose to stop, simply let us know you no longer want to participate by emailing WaterUseSurvey@wessexwater.co.uk or calling 0345 600 3 600 (quote ref. Water Use Survey).
We would prefer to attend whilst you are at home to ensure the accuracy of our survey.
You can request your water use information by using the contact details on the invitation letter or by emailing us at: WaterUseSurvey@wessexwater.co.uk
We will send you the voucher via post within one month of the monitor being fitted.
You will receive your voucher via post.
