How to do a leak test if you have a meter
If you have a water meter, carry out this simple test to check if you have a leak.
Before you start
You will need access to your water meter and internal stop tap.

1. Make sure no water is being used
Turn off all appliances in your home and garden to make sure no water is being used.
This includes your washing machine, dishwasher, shower and hosepipe.
2. Check your water meter
Find your water meter and remove the lid to check if the dial is still moving.
3. Turn off your internal stop tap
Find and turn off your internal stop tap to turn off your water supply.
You can check that your water supply is off by turning on your cold kitchen tap.
4. Check your meter again
Check your meter again to see if the dial is still moving.
If the dial is still moving
There is most likely a leak outside your property – follow our external leak guide for advice.
