How to do a leak test if you don’t have a meter

If you don’t have a water meter, carry out this simple test to check if you have a leak.


Before you start

You will need access to your internal stop tap.

1. Listen for a noise

Find your internal stop tap and listen for a hissing or knocking noise.

2. Turn off your internal stop tap

Turn off your internal stop tap to turn off your water supply.

You can check that your water supply is off by turning on your cold kitchen tap.

3. Listen for a noise again

Check if you can still hear a hissing or knocking noise coming from your internal stop tap.

If you can still hear a noise

There is most likely a leak outside your property – follow our external leak guide for advice.

If you can no longer hear a noise

There is most likely a leak inside your property – follow our internal leak guide for advice.
